What is Healthy Drinking?

The recommended weekly limit is 14 units of alcohol for both men and women. But you shouldn't save up your weekly units for one session! It is recommended that have 2-3 days per week alcohol-free!

So what does one unit look like?










Be aware! The strength of your drink varies by brand. Units are calculated as a percentage of the whole drink or alcohol by volume (ABV)  so for example wine that says 13% volume or 13% ABV on it's label contains 13% pure alcohol.

One unit is 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol. Because alcoholic drinks come in different strengths and sizes, units are a way to tell how strong your drink is. How many calories are there in alcohol?

Do you know how many calories are in your favourite tipple? Here are some examples;









Alcohol is made from sugar and starch and contains 7 calories per gram! Alcohol reduces the amount of fat your body burns for energy as it can't be stored. The body needs to get rid of it as a priority. This interupts all the other processes that should be taking place including absorbing nutrients and burning fat!

Strategies for drinking less at home and when you're out:

  • Pour smaller amounts into your glass
  • Opt for small 125ml glasses
  • Measure spirits insteading of just guessing
  • Pour your own drinks. If your partner or host is constantly topping up your half empty glass, it's hard to keep track of how much alcohol you're drinking
  • Ask for a smaller glass of wine
  • Drink spritzers if you like wine or a pint of shandy if you like beer, you'll get a large drink but one that contains less alcohol
  • Alternate alcoholic drinks with soft drinks
  • If you're still not certain how much you're drinking ask the bar staff. Do they pour doubles or singles? How big is their large glass of wine?
