Age UK Bedfordshire volunteers provide a vital service to older people in Bedfordshire.

We offer a variety of volunteering opportunities. These include:

- Providing administrative support to staff and other volunteers working out of our Bedford Office

- Community Support Volunteers (volunteers visit older people in their own homes, assisting with the completion of complex benefit application forms)

- Telephone Befriending (we provide one to one telephone befriending working from our Bedford Office)

- Information and Advice Advisors (volunteers can choose to work from our Bedford Office or make home visits providing invaluable information and advice to older people – full and comprehensive training is given).

All volunteers undergo full induction and training, relevant to the volunteering role they elect to take on.

The age range of our volunteers has been from 25 years to 92 years old!

In recent years we have helped on average over 20,000 older people across Bedfordshire each year. Sometimes the help is as simple as signposting someone to a local place of worship. More experienced volunteers help people with more complex needs. These may include debt reduction/management, housing issues or advocacy work. Last year we helped older people in Bedfordshire gain an additional £1 million in unclaimed benefit entitlements. This meant that older people who would have otherwise kept their heating down too low, or gone without vital sustenance or not been able to attend GP or hospital appointments because of irregular bus services now have sufficient money to pay heating bills, buy more food or pay for taxis so that they can attend vital health related appointments.

You will be assured of a very warm welcome and if you do become one of our team, you will receive first class training (at a pace dictated by you) together with ongoing support. Obviously any expenses are fully reimbursed. We have volunteers from all walks of life and from all communities.

As one of our volunteers recently said:

“The difference between getting up to go to work and getting up to volunteer for Age UK Bedfordshire is that in the first instance you know you had to do it regardless of whether you enjoyed it or not, but with volunteering you do it because you grow to love it.”

Why not join us and make a difference!
