We are an independent, local charity working in the community to support older people, their families and carers.
Age UK Gloucestershire is a local charity with a national name. We are a brand partner of the national charity, Age UK. however we are independent, responsible for our own funding, governed by a board of Trustees drawn from across Gloucestershire, and with our own strategy. We work to support the people of Gloucestershire.
Operating from our administrative office in Barnwood Gloucester, our colleagues deliver our services across the county, within the community. We are also dependent on the support we get from a dedicated group of over 50 volunteers, without who we would be unable to provide the level of service we do.
Our ambition is to make Gloucestershire the best county in which to grow older. We want this to be the case for all people regardless of their background or circumstances.
We see ageing as something that our society should value; growing older is not just a fact of life, it is something that brings opportunities for individuals and our community as a whole.
A key part of our work is bringing about a change in people’s attitudes and experiences, so that everyone shares our positive view of growing older. We’re doing this because negative attitudes towards age and ageing have a damaging impact on the health and well-being of older people.
All life stages present their own unique challenges and older age is no exception. We help people to navigate later life by providing them with free access to high-quality information, advice and support.
A key part of a happy later life is being able to live independently at home. We work with people to help them retain their independence and stay living in the own home for as long as possible.
We believe that no one should have to age on their own – social contact and belonging to a community is a vital part of healthy ageing. We work with people and organisations throughout Gloucestershire to make sure that all communities are inclusive of all ages, and are places where everyone feels valued and able to play an active role in community life.
By enabling people to make informed choices, working with others in an innovative way and by challenging unhelpful social attitudes, we can build a fairer society and a better Gloucestershire – for everyone.
