Ever since I can remember, technology has been integrated into my life, and having been born on this side of the millennium, I have been able to witness its rapid advancement firsthand. Because of this, I have been able to appreciate and understand the many advantages digital technology has, and the ways it can support us in our day-to-day lives. From allowing us to remain in contact with distant friends and relatives across the world, to the life-saving medical achievements that have been made possible because of it, the examples are endless. I truly believe that technology can support us all to live our best lives and explore endless possibilities…

Though I believe the benefits of technology by far outweigh the negatives, it would be extremely naïve of me not to acknowledge the influence these factors can have on someone at the beginning of their digital journey. It can certainly be a scary experience, but in my opinion, a necessary one, nonetheless. The fact is, the world is turning digital, and preventing the transition to technology seems rather unlikely considering many public services have already made the switch to online platforms. Whether it’s managing finances or booking medical appointments, it’s clear that digital literacy is becoming increasingly necessary to navigate daily life. And whilst this may come naturally for some, we need to ensure that those at risk of ‘getting left behind’ are supported to access the internet safely, so that they aren’t excluded from society.

Through tablet loan schemes and volunteer tutors, Age UK Gloucestershire can open the digital world door so people that might not have otherwise accessed the internet, can. You don’t have to be an expert straight away, you can gradually learn it over time. Think of it like a marathon, not a sprint, after all. Simply learning to unlock your smartphone and check your text messages is a massive step forward.
