As the toll taken by coronavirus is recited daily on our televisions and radio, and with direct experiences of loss in our communities, the ability to talk honestly about death has never been more important. Every year, during national Dying Matters Awareness Week, we are encouraged to find ways to explore and express our feelings about death though photography, performances and informal meet-ups.

With the coronavirus pandemic making it impossible to come together in person, this year the Islington Future Matters Service (a partnership between Gentle Dusk and Age UK Islington) is hosting a series of virtual Death Cafes.

Founded in 2010 by Jon Underwood in his mother’s Hackney flat, Death Cafes have been taking place from Mumbai to Melbourne, and we have hosted many in Islington.  They are places where people can come to talk about death and dying without euphemism or embarrassment; to share feelings and to reflect on their personal thoughts and experiences. The Islington Future Matters Death Café’s, usually happen every three months in the café of the Almeida Theatre just off Upper Street. This year people can join virtually from their own home.

Death Cafes have no agenda – they aren’t bereavement counselling, although advice on where to find that is always offered - they are simply a safe place for people to come and talk about a subject that sometimes even their friends and families find so hard to discuss.
