Let's Talk May 2025 - Planning ahead
Published on 02 June 2025 07:06 PM
The May Let's Talk was all about the care and support we might need to stay independent - whether this is when we get older or living with a disability or health condition. It also had a talk about putting plans in place so that someone we trust can carry out our health and financial wishes - in case of a medical emergency or at end of life.
Planning for the Future
'Planning for the Future' is an Age UK Islington service that provides information sessions and support to help you formally nominate those who you trust to manage your health & financial affairs, should you need them to in the future. This might be in an emergency, if you're in hospital and are unable to manage your affairs e.g paying for your rent or care costs, if you do not have mental capacity or at end of life.
Judith and Julia from Age UK Islington gave an introduction to Lasting Powers of Attorney documents, Advance Care Plans and Wills on the day - these are some of the main ways to assign responsibilities, record and share your wishes with family and medical professionals.

Getting care and support and how much this costs
As part of the May Let's Talk session, we also had a talk from Islington Council about what care and support is available through adult social care and how to access this support through a 'Needs Assessment'. The talk also covered how people typically cover the cost of this care - whether you would pay for this yourself or if you'd be eligible for help with costs of social care. This is decided through a 'Financial Assessment'.
