The much loved Sobell Get Together moved back downstairs following the re-opening of the sports hall, in late spring this year. To mark the occasion, earlier this month we had a special edition of the regular Sobell Get Together, with some extra refreshments and food.

It was a great opportunity to reunite regular attendees, those who hadn't been for a while and to warmly welcome new faces to the session!

Jane Stokes, Community Connector at Age UK Islington, went along, "On Tuesday 15th I had the pleasure of attending the relaunch of the Sobell sports hall which was delightful - seeing the badminton nets back up and being used, the short net tennis and bowls!

Having spent many a Thursday morning at the AUKI in partnership with Better Leisure and the Get Together weekly event downstairs in the hall, it was devastating to hear the news of the flood back in August 2022 which closed the ground floor completely and put an end to the popular badminton!!

Despite the damage to the leisure centre, the weekly event continued but on a much smaller scale and I am so glad we did. At first we were in the boxing room which was pretty small and with a boxing ring but we managed to squeeze in one table tennis table alongside a bowls mat to try and keep the momentum going. Fortunately we were moved to a dance studio upstairs after a few months, which allowed 2 table tennis tables and even room for a gentle exercise class at the end of the session.

But I have to say the transformation yesterday was incredible and seeing lots of familiar faces really made me smile. The sports hall is bright and airy and it was great to see the return of badminton and short net tennis!  I got to chat to some lovely new people and some familiar faces.

Thank you Mikael and all the team at Better Leisure for such an enthusiastic relaunch with at least 30 people and some lovely refreshments.  I hope everyone continues to attend and more people try out the session and enjoy the sports, the chats over board games and dominoes and mainly just a relaxed atmosphere. It was truly great to back!"

And Mikael Kiviniemi, Better Community Sports Manager, commented, “It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying a wide range of activities. I hope all the new participants who came along to become regulars. The newly refurbished sports hall has allowed us to introduce even more activities, like short tennis and badminton. It’s a fun and friendly group, and I’d encourage anyone to come down and give the social session a try!”
