Running 12 marathons in 12 months for Age UK Leeds

Age UK's Rachel McHale, Ageing Well Manager has chosen to try and complete 12 marathons in 12 months to raise money for Age UK Leeds, to support older adults living through the pandemic and recovering after over 12 months of lockdown.

She said 'I have been lucky enough to be able to run out in the countryside and connect with nature and see the world beyond my home. Many older adults will not have left their homes during the pandemic and will need support to build back a life that they can enjoy again because “Tomorrow will be a good day” Captain Tom Moore. I’d be really grateful if you would sponsor just a little or a lot, whatever you can.

The last year has been a challenge for all of us and as a way of keeping a routine, keeping fit and keeping well I have been running every week since April 2020. Soon I will have committed to a year of consistently running. I started off just jogging around the block and feeling very unfit and very slow and like getting out the door in some kind of running kit was a challenge in itself. I thought the only way I am going to be able to do this is if I am consistent and I commit to carrying on. So I made myself a promise and made myself run every week in all weather. As part of motivating myself I signed up to STRAVA which is an App anyone can use to track exercise – since April 2020 I have ran 244 miles (392km) which is the equivalent to just over 9 marathons. So my target is to complete the distance of 12 marathons in 12 months. That means I have 70 miles to complete in 4 and half weeks….. 17 miles a week!'

You may have seen Captain Tom’s family in the news launching their new fundraising campaign – the 100 challenge.

We would love it if some of you/your family/friends/volunteers could take part and raise funds for AUKL. Here is the info in a nutshell - between 30 April and 3 May what challenge involving the number 100 could you take? It doesn’t have to be physical activity – it can be anything at all – bake and sell 100 cupcakes, donate £100, eat 100 chocolate bars, sing 100 songs – you can make it work for you.

It would be great to share some of what we do on social media, so please drop us a line at lisa.burnett@ageukleeds.org.uk if you are going to take on the 100 challenge to raise money for AUKL. More can be found in this link: Captain Tom 100 - Get Involved - Virgin Money Giving
