Age UK Reading STAR clubs

Coming soon!

Please check back here for updates.

Age UK Reading STAR Clubs are a place for older people to come during the day. Our Star Clubs provide:

Conversation, reminiscence, singing, games and more to ensure the time with us is full of things to do, join in with, and think about.

Scientists have shown that stimulating activity has a theraputic effect on older people’s cognitive function. Taking part in social, inclusive games and activities encourages a sense of belonging, improves wellbeing and eases loneliness.

A mix of sensory, cognitive and physical activities will make our members feel part of the group, and get them involved. Being and remaining active plays a huge role in improving wellbeing.

Our three hour clubs are bookended by transport on Readibus which we will help to arrange for you. This means that the club member is out and about for at least 4 hours on the day of the club. This offers a real opportunity for respite for any carer or family member who may need time for other errands, leisure activity, or maybe just a break!

Broader support.

As part of Age UK Reading being connected to the clubs also gives the client easy access to a wider support network. We have access to high quality information and support and our information service can connect clients and their carers to support from elsewhere in the system or other groups in town. Good information can empower people to make better decisions about their wellbeing.

Help with Transport

Working with our partners at ReadiBus we support people to be able to get out to live active lives and engage in the community. ReadiBus collect people from their doorstep and our staff and volunteers meet the people from the bus and assist people into the room where the club is held.

Running of our clubs

Our clubs are located at Sheltered Housing homes across Reading and Woodley and run from Monday to Saturday inclusive. We use the kitchens of these homes to provide for our lunch clubs freshly prepared food. Alternatively, we use the hall at our base in Walford Hall which itself has a high-quality catering standard kitchen.

We offer extra support to clients who attend our clubs. We meet them from the minibus and help them move in and out of the building. We help them with cutting up food if required and can guide them to and from the toilets. We do however ask that clients are able to eat by themselves and go to the toilet by themselves as we do not provide a full personal care service.

Occasional outings are arranged such as trips to the pantomime or river cruises which our club members are invited to attend at an additional cost.

Our Clubs cost £13 for 3 hours which includes a light meal such as soup and a roll, sandwiches, or cake and custard. It also covers the help we offer with arranging transport.

You may notice we also offer another type of club which looks similar called MCST, which stands for Maintenance of Cognitive Stimulation Therapy. This club is specifically for those with an early diagnosis of Dementia.

It has been designed to be run on a clearly defined programme with guidelines about how we operate, how we monitor clients and the content that we deliver. It is based on the 7 week CST course run by the NHS but is designed to run for longer. These clubs have tighter limits on numbers and demand more work of our staff both before and after the sessions. As such, they are priced differently.
