Warning over bogus callers

24 June 2016

Age UK Rotherham is warning older people and their relatives to be aware that there may be people in the Rotherham area who are calling at older people’s homes claiming to be from Age UK Rotherham and asking for payment of bills. They may be wearing what appears to be an ‘official’ uniform.

Lesley Dabell, Age UK Rotherham’s Chief Executive, said, ‘Age UK Rotherham staff will never call at any older person’s home asking for payment of bills out of the blue.  All payment arrangements are agreed with the customer when a service is set up for them, so anything out of the ordinary should always be questioned.

All Age UK Rotherham staff carry identification and wear a badge.  We strongly encourage all older people to insist on checking the identity of anyone who knocks on their door to make sure they are who they say they are, wherever they say they are from.

If you are at all unsure whether someone is genuinely from Age UK Rotherham you should always contact our office to check that it is a member of our staff, leaving them outside your closed door whilst you do so. Our staff are never offended by being asked for their identification or by being asked to wait whilst a call is made to our office to check.’

If you or someone you know wants to check that a caller is a genuine Age UK Rotherham member of staff please call 01709 786955 between 9.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday.
