We were going to have a few weeks off but loads of news is coming in, so we decided to drop another email into your inbox. There is no quiz this week but we do have the winning numbers for this month’s 100 Club. Three of you are very lucky people.

Find out about volunteering at our Coffee & Cake Morning

For many people, the pandemic meant a long time of being lonely and having no one to talk to.

Our Keeping In Touch telephone service was set up to deal with isolation during the pandemic and we currently have 150 people who we phone every week. We are now looking to develop the service by setting up a bank of volunteers to help with face-to-face meetings, mobile befrienders to help people with transport, and volunteers to help with the telephone befriending.

If you would like to join a team that makes a real difference to older people in Bury, come to our drop-in session on this coming Monday (1st November) in the café at 11.00. Over a slice of cake and a brew, you can find out more about befriending with Jane and Steph. Alternatively, call Jane on 0161 763 9030 or email jane@ageukbury.org.uk

A Christmas Concert By The Radcliffe Male Voice Choir

By popular request, we are pleased to announce that there will be a Christmas Concert led by the excellent Radcliffe Male Voice Choir. This year, the Choir is celebrating its centenary year, having formed in 1921.

It is taking place on Saturday 4th December at 2.00 pm (Doors Open at 1.30 pm) at the Jubilee Centre.

Tickets are on sale at £10.00 and the price includes refreshments at the interval. Full refunds will be given if the event is cancelled or if you, or the person you care for, fall ill (We will not need any evidence of sickness – we will take your word for it). Tickets are available now from the Jubilee Centre reception.

Please phone 0161 763 9030 for more details.

Christmas Fayre

We have decided to cancel this year’s Christmas Fayre, which we had planned for 20th November. We are however planning “The Fabulous Spring Fayre” for 2nd April 2022, when the warmer weather will allow us to use the green next to the Jubilee Centre. Pop the date into your new diary – it is going to be a fabulous day!

Bury Older People’s Network

The Network will be holding their next get together for people over 50 living in Bury on Wednesday 3rd November 2021 and they will be talking about how we can "Live with Covid"

As this featured highly on the themes from the last meeting, and in light of the media information around Plan B or not, it was felt that it would be good to have a get together around this sooner rather than later.

The Network will be meeting at Our Lady of Grace Church Hall, Fairfax Road, Prestwich M25 1AS at 1pm - 3pm and they will have refreshments available.

Places are limited so please can you let Julie Bentley know as soon as possible if you are able to attend. Send an email to julie.bentley@buryvcfa.org.uk

Thank you To Turners Jewellers, Nelson

This Tuesday, we held a pop-up sale at the Jubilee. Doreen, Sheila and Muriel sold donations from Turners Jewellers in Nelson at the Jubilee Centre. They raised an amazing £250 and some of our members walked away with some lovely bargains.

Thank you to all at Turners and to our wonderful members for their support to our cause.

Friends Together

This week, Stella Brown retired from her job as Friends Together Organiser, having worked at Age UK Bury for over 19 years. Friends Together is a marvelous service and we are extremely grateful for Stella’s management of the service through these most difficult times. When we were closed, Stella phoned each member once a week to make sure they were OK and organized doorstep visits to see Friends members throughout the year. Stella was due to retire earlier this year but delayed her departure date to ensure the service was back up and running before she left. We wish Stella a very happy retirement.

We welcome back Carla Halewood who will take over the running of the service from Monday. Carla has previously worked with us for ten years and we are delighted she is back with us.

Member’s News

We were saddened to hear the news of Mike Connolly and our thoughts are with Ian and Mike’s family and friends at this time.

We are grateful for all the support Mike gave to our charity. In his year as Mayor, Mike joined our 20th year celebrations and led the dancing. In his retirement, Mike became a regular member at our café and an enthusiastic member of our fundraising group.  We will miss his support, positivity, and cheerfulness. Rest In Peace Mike
