Can't Wait For Care Campaign

Published on 03 March 2023 01:05 PM

Our Chief Executive, Michael Garrett, writes to local MPs.

Our Chief Executive, Michael Garrett, has today, written to Coventry and Warwickshire MPs, urging them to ask the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, to use the Spring Budget on Wednesday 15 March, to tackle care assessment backlogs, reduce waiting lists and ensure all older people can get the care and support they need.

The social care system remains under extreme pressure and is getting worse. Underfunding continues to be one of the biggest issues in the sector and despite new funding announced in 2022, local authorities and care homes don’t have the financial resources available to meet rising demand.
Age UK analysis shows that in England, 28% of people who had asked for a social care assessment had been waiting six months or more, just to find out what, if any, support they can get. As a consequence, 2.6 million people in England over 50 are unable to get care.
This includes hundreds of thousands who are stuck on waiting lists for support, or even just waiting to have their needs assessed: millions left struggling to go to the toilet, eat, get dressed or wash because they can’t do these things unaided.
