Celebrating Our Volunteers: The Heart of Age UK Croydon

Published on 05 June 2025 12:29 PM

As we mark Volunteers’ Week 2025, we want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on the incredible individuals who give their time, energy, and compassion to help older people across Croydon thrive.

At Age UK Croydon, volunteers are the beating heart of everything we do. From offering a friendly chat to supporting wellbeing, their impact is felt every single day.

Whether it’s a warm smile, a helping hand, or a listening ear, our volunteers bring joy, comfort, and connection to the lives of older people in our community.

Why Volunteers Matter

Volunteering isn’t always about grand gestures — sometimes, it’s the small, consistent acts of kindness that make the biggest difference.

Every hour given helps combat loneliness, promote independence, and improve wellbeing. Our volunteers help people stay active, informed, and connected — and that’s something worth celebrating!

Meet Some of Our Incredible Volunteers

From Jean, who supports our information team, to Geraldine, who brings joy through wellbeing calls — and Helen, Mary, Brenda, Pauline, Marie, and Dolly, who brighten days with their warm presence and genuine care — our volunteers come from all walks of life, each bringing something special.

They give their time, not for recognition, but because they care. And we couldn’t be more grateful.

Could You Be a Volunteer Too?

We’re currently looking for more kind, community-minded people to join our volunteer team. Whether you have an hour a week or more, your time can make a lasting impact.

Here are some of the roles we’re actively recruiting for:

🧓 Befriending Volunteer

Support an older person through regular phone calls or visits. A simple conversation can brighten someone’s whole week.

🏡 Practical Support Volunteer

Help with shopping, light errands, or administrative tasks — supporting independence for those who need a hand.

📞 Wellbeing Caller

Provide regular check-in calls, offering a listening ear and vital emotional support.

🧠 Information & Advice Support

Help signpost older people to the right services, benefits, and support — making sure they get the help they need.

🌱 Community Engagement Volunteer

Join us at local events, support outreach activities, and help spread the word about the work we do.

Volunteering is Flexible, Rewarding — and Open to Everyone

Whether you're retired, working part-time, studying, or just looking to give back, we’d love to hear from you. No specialist skills required — just kindness, reliability, and a willingness to help.

You’ll receive training, ongoing support, and the chance to be part of a friendly, welcoming team that truly values what you do.

Ready to Make a Difference?

If you've been inspired by the amazing volunteers we’ve celebrated this week, why not join them? This Volunteers' Week, we're not only saying thank you — we’re also inviting you to be part of something meaningful.
