Ageing Without Children: Turning Worries into Peace of Mind

Jane’s story shows how community membership and support can instil confidence and control in those who are navigating later life without children.
Jane* has undiagnosed learning difficulties so she has been struggling to get her legal and medical forms updated, and in place. Not having family around to support her, this was becoming a particular worry for Jane. She attends our Ageing Without Children (AWOC) monthly social group primarily for social interaction, but also finds the information and support offered by AUKG, as well as other AWOC members, invaluable.
Our AWOC Group Co-ordinator and Help Team Advisor, Beth introduced Jane to the NHS One Gloucestershire Personalised Care initiative called ‘What Matters to Me’ - an orange folder whereby Jane could record and store important information about her future care preferences. The folder is important particularly for someone living on their own, as it acts as an advocate for them in the event they are unable to advocate for themselves.
Jane felt empowered by the support of the AWOC Group to put her care preferences in place, with the support of Beth to complete the documentation. She stated her delight to have her preferences documented saying, "I feel I now have a voice which can be heard even if I am too ill to advise people on what I want."
Being part of AUKG's AWOC Group has brought Jane much comfort, expressing "I feel so happy to have this group. For me, I like to meet people who know what it is like to be getting older without children. We support each other and look out for each other, which is a wonderful feeling.”
