Support When Memory Concerns Begin: How Age UK Gloucestershire Can Help
Did you know that Age UK Gloucestershire offers a tailor-made service to support you or a loved one if you’re concerned about memory changes or cognitive function? Worrying about memory loss can be frightening and isolating, but you don’t have to face it alone.
Our Dementia, Diagnosis and Memory Support Service (DDMS) is here to support you from the very first moment you begin to notice changes in your memory or cognition. It’s important to remember that not every memory issue is dementia. However, because of the stigma and fear surrounding dementia, many people delay speaking to loved ones or healthcare professionals. This delay can increase anxiety and uncertainty at a time when reassurance and guidance are most needed.
Seeking help early can make a real difference. Whether or not you go on to receive a dementia diagnosis, reaching out sooner can help you understand what’s happening and allow you to breathe a little easier. Our DDMS team is here to listen, answer questions, and help alleviate fears in a compassionate and understanding way.
Making yourself vulnerable to medical professionals can feel daunting. Many people describe this period as lonely, overwhelming, and filled with unanswered questions. That’s where our DDMS team can step in. We provide emotional support, practical advice, and a consistent point of contact throughout the process. You don’t have to navigate this journey on your own.
We work closely with the Managing Memory Together Team and the Alzheimer’s Society, ensuring that everyone receives joined-up, person-centred support tailored to their individual needs. Our approach is holistic, meaning we look beyond memory concerns alone and focus on your overall wellbeing.
In addition to memory support, we can help in many other practical ways. This includes advice on benefits you may be entitled to, information about local support groups, friendship groups and social clubs, and guidance around important future planning such as will writing and Powers of Attorney. We can also speak with your loved ones, helping them better understand your situation and equipping them with the knowledge to support you effectively.
Importantly, our support doesn’t stop after one phone call. If you wish, we can remain alongside you throughout any potential diagnosis and continue supporting you for up to 12 months post-diagnosis. Our aim is to provide reassurance, continuity, and confidence during what can be a very uncertain time.
One of the biggest challenges people face when they worry about dementia is the fear of how life might change. At Age UK Gloucestershire, we’re here to show you that with an open mind, the right information, and the right support, it is possible to continue living the life you want to live.
If you or someone you care about has concerns about memory or cognitive changes, reaching out could be the first step toward clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.
