“It was a really interesting experience. We took over a year to take all the photographs and it was fascinating for us all to get an insight into each others’ lives. We got to know each other much better!”
The Age UK Islington photography group’s latest project – photographing Domestic Lives London and Korea came out of a friendship that started with an intergenerational project some years ago. This was a fabulous collaboration between Age UK Islington and St Martins Art College. Age UK Islington photography client, Eddie Mence, kept in touch with Yoon Bae, who after graduating went back to her home country of South Korea.
For The Domestic Lives project, the Age UK Islington photography group took it in turns to photograph each other’s homes or favourite places. The aim was to capture every day life in the UK, and to contrast this with domestic lives in South Korea. Yoon, who is now a professional multi-media artist, worked really hard in South Korea to bring together the contrasting collection.
The fabulous photos that resulted, from both South Korea and London, were exhibited in both countries. In London the international photos were exhibited at the Drovers regular Art Evening, which takes place on the last Thursday of every month.
Peter Kyte is the volunteer who runs the photography group, and in addition to his work as a Town Planner, he is practising urban and arts photographer. The group has been running for over 5 years now, and Eddie says that Peter “puts in so much work to the group, and provides lots of inspiration and guidance”. As part of the transition plans for the activities based at Drovers, Age UK Islington and Islington Council are firming up plans for a new “home” for the photography group and we look forward to seeing more of their fantastic work in 2020.
