COVID-19 & THE AGE UK WANDSWORTH COMMUNITY

Published on 13 March 2020 04:39 PM

We are aware that the situation with Covid-19 will temporarily have a significant effect on daily life in the UK and that older people, especially those with underlying health conditions, will be the hardest hit. At Age UK Wandsworth, we are committed to supporting our service users to the best of our ability throughout the pandemic. We are also in discussion with other organisations, including the Council, about how we can work together to ensure the most vulnerable are supported as the pandemic progresses.

Many Wandsworth residents are asking how they can help and our response is threefold:

1)  Support your neighbours
Identify the older people, or those with underlying health conditions, in your community that you might be able to support should they need/wish to self-isolate. This might be doing their shopping, collecting prescriptions or making a regular telephone call to help them feel less isolated and to help reduce anxiety.
In addition, please be aware that online supermarket shopping slots are currently hard to book and many housebound people are suffering as a result, so if you can reduce your online shopping and go the supermarket instead, that will free up a slot for someone who really needs it.

2) Donate essentials
We are collecting food/household goods for delivery to older vulnerable people in our community. We most urgently need: Tinned soup, vegetable, meat/fish, long-life milk, microwaveable foods that do not need refrigerating, toilet rolls and cleaning products. Please deliver any of our drop-off points:

  • Age UK Wandsworth: 549 Old York Road, SW18 1TQ 9am to 4pm Mon to Fri
  • ShopMobility: 45 Garratt Lane, SW18 4AD (in the back of Sainsburys) 9.30am to 2.30pm Mon to Sat
  • Wandsworth Community Transport: 1B Yukon Road, SW12 9PZ. 9am to 5pm Mon to Fri

3)  Donate money

If you can't donate items, you can donate directly to our Coronavirus Shopping Support Fund, this will allow us to buy additional items to keep our supplies up for the duration of this crisis. You can donate at:
