Spread the Warmth

Published on 08 January 2024 03:00 PM

Spread the Warmth is a campaign by Age UK aiming to increase public understanding of the health dangers posed to older people in West Cumbria by cold weather and decreasing temperatures.

The campaign aims to reach older people, their friends and families with advice about staying safe this winter and also to encourage locals to support the Age UK West Cumbria by volunteering, donating or campaigning.

Watch the video below to find out more about cold weather affecting our health.

The challenges facing older people this winter

What can you do to help?

We have two fundraising ideas that you can get involved in to raise awareness for the Spread the Warmth campaign:

Donate a Coat

"Donate a Coat" is a brilliant initiative that encourages community members to contribute preloved coats or other warm clothing items for resale in our charity shop,s thereby generating funds for a cause. This simple yet impactful idea relies on the goodwill of West Cumbrian locals willing to donate items they no longer need, turning them into resources that can make a difference!

Wrap up and Walk

Join us for the "Wrap Up and Walk" event to support Age UK West Cumbria. Bundle up in your cosiest winter gear and hit the beautiful Cumbrian countryside with us for a fun-filled walk, all while raising vital funds for our community's older adults. Whether you prefer a brisk stroll with friends, a themed walk with family, or even a solo adventure, every step you take will make a real impact. Let's embrace the winter spirit, stay active, and come together to ensure our older neighbors stay warm and supported. Your participation matters!

How to participate

1. Decide where you’re going to walk, when you’ll be doing it, and the distance you’ll be covering.

2. Ask for sponsorship from friends and family. Tell everyone what you’re doing and why.

3. Wrap Up & Walk!

4. Feel good knowing the money you’ve raised will help make a life-changing difference to older people in your area.

Kids and teachers alike will love this challenge, they can get involved by:

Businesses

Show you mean business by:

  • ask staff to walk a set distane or number of steps over a week or month
  • head out together on a team-building walk, wearing their best winter clothes
  • make it a competition to see which team or staff member can walk the most distance or steps and raise the most money!
