I hope you and your loved ones are safe and well.

It has been another difficult week in Bury and there remains some confusion about what is allowed whilst we are living in tier three conditions. We include the important links, so you have the right information.

In this week’s newsletter, we are announcing the launch of our 100 Club and we have some great news about our online video classes, run by Sue and Diana.

I hope you enjoy the newsletter.

Coronavirus in Bury (30th October update)

Last week, the number of people in Bury testing positive for coronavirus was 415 per 100,000 people. On Thursday, this number was 540 per 100,000 people. So the infections are still rising and there is a big need for everyone to stay safe.

The government has placed Bury in the “tier three” restriction category which means there is a “Very High” of infection spreading.

The Bury Council website lists the rules that apply in Bury.

https://www.bury.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=15594

These rules will remain in place for at least the next three weeks.

New Guidance for people who are clinically extremely vulnerable

There is new guidance for people who are clinically extremely vulnerable to help them protect themselves from Coronavirus.

This includes:

  • stay at home as much as possible
  • avoid all but essential travel
  • significantly reduce shopping trips

Finding up to date information on Age UK Bury Services

For up to date information on all our services, this newsletter is the most reliable source of information. It is the quickest way for us to get information out to people.

Over the years we have been on the internet, various websites have borrowed or lifted information and they have not updated it since the pandemic began. It is only this week, that I have found some time to update our own website. It is not an easy job and involves a lot of coffee, muttering and the occasional naughty word, when the software tells you that you have deleted a morning's work! .

Whilst the web is great for information, there is also a lot of misinformation out there. At a time when things change every week, this newsletter is the most reliable source of information. Keep reading it and please share it with your friends.

Jubilee Centre Membership

This year, we will not be charging people for the renewal of their membership card. Any that were already renewed for the period of 2020-2021 will now cover the 2021 to 2022 period.

Christmas Meals 2020

We suspect that we will not be able to hold our annual Christmas Dinners as we used to. Nearer the time we will look at what we can do, so we can keep everyone safe. We will keep you posted here.

Online Activities

This week we received some great news from our national partner, Age UK. As a result of their successful Coronavirus fundraising campaign, we have received funding to support some of our work in Bury. With this funding, we will be continuing our online classes until the end of January.

We are grateful to Sue and Diana for leading these classes.

Sue holds a Tai Chi class online on Fridays at 11.00 am on the Zoom video app.  Send an email to taichi.college@yahoo.co.uk or message Sue via Facebook at m.me/taichiandwildgooseqigongbury for an access code.

Diana will be live on our Facebook page on Mondays and Wednesdays.

  • Monday: 11.00 to 11.30 am: Gentle Exercise
  • Monday: 11.40 to 12.10 Chair Based Exercises
  • Wednesday: 11.00 to 12.00 am: Pilates

If you can’t make these times, Facebook will let you watch at a later time. Join us at https://www.facebook.com/ageukbury/

Jubilee Centre Café

We will continue to open the café from 10.30 to 2.30, Mondays to Fridays until further notice. We are really pleased to see our friends support our café and it makes opening worthwhile.

Information and Advice

Our information and advice service supports people with benefit checks and filling in application forms for Attendance Allowance and Pension Credits.

Please send an email to info@ageukbury.org.uk or call Louise on 07872 067662 or Ruth on 07547 400142.

Handy Person Service

Our service helps with small DIY and repair jobs such as fitting handrails and security locks, putting up shelves, curtain rails and wall decorations; assembling flat pack furniture; minor plumbing, painting and decorating work and changing light bulbs. All work will be carried out adhering to Covid-19 regulations to protect you and Andrew, who is our Handy Person Manager.

Written quotes will be given for all work. Prices are dependent on the scale and length of work being done. If you have a couple of small jobs which could be completed in an hour, it would cost £30 plus materials.

We are also working with trusted traders to help people with specialist work (e.g. replacement of boilers, roofing etc)

Contact Sue on 0161 796 6949 or email hp@ageukbury.org.uk

We can accept a limited amount of donations at the Bury shop. We must store all donations for 72 hours before we can sort them and space in the shop is limited. Please phone 0161 761 2780 to check we have space before you set out.

We are unable to collect and we cannot receive and store items at the Jubilee Centre.

We are planning to reopen our Ramsbottom shop later next week. We had hoped it would be open this week, but things got a little too busy!

The Quiz

The last quiz was on Halloween Anagrams! The answers are in the link.

This week’s quiz is two-part seasonal with questions about Halloween and Bonfire Night! Click here for the fun!
