Bring Me Sunshine: Laura chats to BBC Radio Lincolnshire
Published on 23 January 2026 11:21 AM
Recently, our Events and Activities Coordinator, Laura, joined BBC Radio Lincolnshire to talk about one of our much-loved activities, the Bring Me Sunshine choir.
The choir is open to people living with dementia and their carers, and it offers far more than a weekly singalong. It provides a welcoming, supportive space where people can come together, connect with others and experience the joy that music can bring.
Why music matters
During the interview, Laura spoke about the powerful effect music can have on people living with dementia. Even when memory, communication or confidence feel harder to access, music can cut through in a way few other things can. Familiar songs can spark recognition, lift mood and create moments of shared connection that are deeply meaningful for everyone involved.
For many of our choir members, these sessions become a highlight, offering routine, companionship and a sense of belonging.
A choir member’s story
Laura also shared the story of one gentleman who attends the choir and whose career was rooted in music. He previously played the organ at Lincoln Cathedral, as well as at venues across the world.
Although he is now much quieter and can find some social situations challenging, the choir brings out a different side of him. When he sings, he comes alive. He enjoys every part of the session and often finds himself naturally leading the group, guiding others and sharing his love of music. It’s a powerful reminder that people are so much more than their diagnosis, and that the right environment can help them shine.
Help us find a new home for the choir
Laura also explained that, due to rising costs at our previous venue, we’re no longer able to continue sessions there. To ensure the Bring Me Sunshine choir can keep going, we’re currently looking for a new venue in Lincoln.
Ideally, we’re looking for a medium to large room with:
- Heating
- Good parking access
- Toilet facilities
- Facilities to make a cup of tea
If you know of a venue that could help us provide a new home for the choir, we’d love to hear from you. Please email activities@ageuklincolnshire.org.uk or call 01522 696 000
