The Big Knit Is Back!

Published on 09 March 2021 03:45 PM

Get the kettle on and grab your knitting needles The Big Knit is back!

For every behatted smoothie that gets sold, Age UK will receive 25p to help us be there for older people who have no one else to turn to.

Since the Big Knit began back in 2003, knitters have helped raise over £3 million for Age UK and our vital work. Our local target is a whopping 10,000 hats.

How you can get involved

Whether you’re new to casting on or already know your garter from your stocking stitch, it's easy to get started. You’ll also be part of the huge knitting team helping us to reach such a monumental target for a great cause.

  1. Be prepared.

Get yourself some needles, wool and your favourite chair and get knitting! Take a look at the new patterns for inspiration

  1. Send us your hats

Package up your lovely hats and send them to us, you can keep sending hats in to help reach the bumper target, unfortunately due to the Covid-19 pandemic we are unable to take them directly from you at our office but you are welcome to save them up and drop them in when government restrictions lift if you’d prefer.

Please send your completed hats to our office in Thornbury via free post to:

Freepost RTEX-ERLY-HUYS, Age UK South Gloucestershire, 67 High Street, Thornbury, Bristol, BS35 2AW.

Alternatively give us a call on 01454 411707 (Option 2) and we can arrange a time to drop them off at the office or to collect them from you if transport or mobility is a problem for you.

Please note that we will need to receive your hats by the latest of the end of September 2021.

  1. Sharing is caring

Show everyone how great your hats are by posting pictures of them online using #BigKnit

How the Big Knit helps older people

Each winter, one older person dies needlessly every seven minutes because of the cold. With over a decade of support from knitters up and down the country, The Big Knit has raised vital funds to support local and national winter projects to help older people keep warm and well in winter through befriending visits, emergency cold weather support, warm meals and other vital services.

The Big Knit is a great way to bring people and communities together. Knitting groups have been held up and down the country for people to get involved, share patterns and have a cup of tea or two!

‘The Big Knit campaign couldn't happen without the support of thousands of amazing people across the UK who take part and knit woolly hats to adorn innocent smoothies each year.’
