Foodie Friday celebrates African Caribbean food month

Published on 30 October 2025 04:02 PM

Throughout October, Age UK Wandsworth’s Foodie Friday Lunch Club celebrated Black History Month with the spotlight on African and Caribbean food. During the month, we asked our clients to share cherished family recipes for a borough-wide African Caribbean Heritage Recipe Book.

We also held a ‘talk show’ where we invited participants with African and Caribbean roots to share personal stories, favourite dishes and recipes, and African and/or Caribbean art and literature with us. This event was attended by Wandsworth Council who were keen to join our Foodie Fridays African Caribbean themed session.

Following the ‘talk show’, jerk chicken with rice and peas was served with plantain on the side, which proved to be very popular. We had 30 people in attendance and received some great feedback from the clients, saying that the food was very tasty and they enjoyed talking and sharing.

We have Irie Rhythms Caribbean Dance sessions every two weeks at our Gwynneth Morgan Day Centre, but this month was extra special as we celebrated Wandsworth African Caribbean Food Month with dance and food!

Together with facilitator, Danielle, clients and staff enjoyed moving to music from Barbados and Mauritius. After the dance session, everyone was treated to lunch with dishes to celebrate African and Caribbean gastronomy top of the menu.

Our African Caribbean themed sessions supported Wandsworth African Caribbean Food month, and marked Black History Month.

Our Foodie Friday Lunch Club sessions are every Friday, 11.30am to 1.30pm. Free to attend, the session includes a craft activity followed by a warm, freshly prepared meal. Irie Rhythms sessions, which can be done seated or standing, take place every other Thursday 11am to 1pm and  include snacks and hot beverages.

Both sessions are held at our Gwynneth Morgan Day Centre. Tel: 020 8877 8947 or email outreach@ageukwandsworth.org.uk
