World Alzheimer's Month

World Alzheimer’s Month in September is to raise awareness of and challenge the stigma of dementia. At Age UK Wandsworth, we run a specialist dementia service for those with moderate and high needs dementia based at our Gwynneth Morgan Day Centre. Our clients benefit from lots of attention from our experienced staff with specialist dementia training who can personalise activities and games based on individual interests and needs.
We are always looking to improve services for people living with dementia in our borough and we also offer Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST) sessions for people who have recently been diagnosed with dementia.
Each MCST programme runs for 24 weeks and consists of a weekly 2 hour session. Sessions are group based and are facilitated by our friendly and patient staff, who have received specialist training in delivering MCST. The sessions are free with a suggested donation of £5 and people do need to commit to attending the whole programme.
Group members take part in meaningful and stimulating activities, which are themed week-by-week to cover a range of topics and cognitive skills. The group format (usually consisting of 8-12 people) offers a fun, supportive environment. Research shows that MCST can have significant positive impact including improved thinking and memory skills for people with mild or moderate dementia; enhanced quality of life; and social engagement.
If you are interested in attending or you’d like refer a friend or family member please call Frank on 020 8877 8947 or email him at daycentre@ageukwandsworth.org.uk
