Age Is Just A Number - Awards Finalist

We were delighted to hear that Age UK Wandsworth is one of the Finalists in the British Data Awards in the Data for Good category! We have been selected for our “Age is just a Number” programme, which is an example of how data, mathematics, and community engagement can be combined to create genuine human impact. This project was a joint initiative between Hypatia Analytics and Age UK Wandsworth, with essential funding support from the London Mathematical Society, and represents an innovative reimagining of what data-driven outreach can look like for older adults, including those experiencing mild dementia.

Traditional data projects often focus on dashboards, algorithms, or high-level insights. This programme took a completely different approach: it used mathematical thinking as a tool for connection, creative learning, memory stimulation, and confidence-building for older people who are rarely considered in mainstream STEM engagement. Over twelve weeks, participants explored topics ranging from historical numeral systems and map-based decoding to Fibonacci patterns in nature and logic-based investigative games. Each session was carefully designed by two of our staff at Age UK Wandsworth to be accessible, culturally inclusive, cognitively stimulating, and joyful.

Older people who initially described themselves as “not good at maths” began taking ownership of patterns, puzzles, and creative reasoning. The structure allowed them to experience mathematics as something playful, human, and achievable, which is not intimidating. Several participants expressed that it had been decades since they last felt confident in a learning environment. “Age is just a Number” is more than a programme - it is a replicable model for how data can be used to support older populations in local communities. It demonstrates that data education does not have to be digital-first or abstract; it can be hands-on, intergenerational, culturally sensitive, and joyful. It also highlights an overlooked truth: older adults are still eager to learn, still capable of complex reasoning, and they deserve equal access to STEM experiences.

With thanks to staff members, Tabea Leiss and Viktorija Bernotaite, for designing the programme from start to finish and to trustee, Karrie Liu, from Hypatia Analytics for data support and coordinating funding. This was truly a team effort!
