As part of Age UK Barnsley’s falls awareness work, the Penistone Ageing Well Together Service have held five 'Sloppy Slipper' events across the Penistone Area. These events invited people aged 50 and over and living in the Penistone Area to come along to learn how to reduce the risk of falling and collect a free pair of slippers. A total of 114 pairs of slippers have been handed out in total.

During these events Age UK Barnsley have provided information on the wide range of services, groups and activities offered in the Penistone area and have taken enquiries that have been signposted to other services and providers where appropriate.

Age UK Barnsley will continue to provide the remaining stock of slippers to the service users who have limited mobility or who have not been able to attend an event.

Commenting, Age UK Barnsley Chief Executive Debby Bunn, said:

‘Badly fitting slippers cause many slips, trips and falls in the home – which are putting older residents at risk.

“Our Penistone Area Sloppy Slipper events provided residents with a free pair of well-fitted slippers as well as accessing information and advice about reducing the risk of falls at home.”

“We are hugely proud to be commissioned and funded by the Penistone Area Council to support the older people within the Penistone areas.
