Age UK Barnsley urge local pensioners not to miss out on vital support

Published on 13 June 2023 07:43 AM

Age UK Barnsley are calling on older people in the Barnsley Borough to check to see if they are eligible for Pension Credit.

12th-16th June is Pension Credit Week of Action, which is designed to raise awareness of Pension Credit to those who might be eligible and to encourage older people on low incomes to come forward and claim what they are entitled to.

An estimated one million eligible pensioner households are not claiming Pension Credit, meaning that £1.7 BILLION in vital support is not going to where it is needed each year.

You can check if you or a loved one is eligible for Pension Credit by visiting gov.uk/pension-credit or calling the national Pension Credit helpline 0800 99 1234.

Alternatively, please get in touch with Age UK Barnsley’s Information and Advice Service on 01226 776825 or via email on information@ageukbarnsley.org.uk.

Commenting, Age UK Barnsley Chief Executive Debby Bunn said:

“Well over a billion pounds of Pension Credit goes unclaimed each year in the UK, meaning that pensioners – including vulnerable older people in Barnsley – are going without the vital support they deserve.

“A successful claim for Pension Credit, even at a low amount, opens the door to a whole host of additional support including free TV licences and extra support with housing and Council Tax.

“Don’t delay, check to see if you are eligible today.”
