Free information and support for older people in Bath and North East Somerset

Attendance Allowance (AA) is a non-means tested disability benefit for those over state pension age. This means you can claim this disability benefit regardless of your income or savings, no financial or capital assets are taken into consideration.

What is Attendance Allowance?

Attendance Allowance is a benefit for older people who need help with personal care or supervision to keep them safe.

Claiming AA does not reduce or impact any other income you receive and is tax-free. You may also qualify for other benefits by claiming Attendance Allowance. You can use the money however you see fit, but it is intended to help with care costs and to help you to maintain your independence.

Eligibility for Attendance Allowance

You may be eligible if:

➤ You’re over state pension age
➤ You have any kind of physical or mental illness/disability
➤ You need help with personal care (getting washed and dressed or supervision to keep you safe)
➤ You’ve needed help and support for at least 6 months
➤ If you’re terminally ill, you can apply immediately.

How much is Attendance Allowance?

There are 2 different weekly rates of AA - the amount awarded depends on your needs:

➤ Lower Rate = £73.90 per week (you need help day OR night)
➤ Higher Rate = £110.40 per week (you need help day AND night)

How do I apply?

We can offer advice and information on pension age benefits and entitlements, including Attendance Allowance.

Help completing forms is available, but due to demand, this is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

There are lots of guides and resources to help you complete your Attendance Allowance form:

A friend, family member, or carer can help you complete the form (record this as evidence of needed support!)
You can fill it in yourself
Age UK volunteers or other charity/community support can help with the form.

The paper application form comes with guidance notes, but there is additional support available.
