Why volunteer?

All of our services are supported by our wonderful team of volunteers and without them, our work would not be possible. We have on average 110 volunteers and we always need more to work in a wide variety of projects. Volunteering provides the chance to make a real difference to the lives of older people in Gateshead and allows us to do far more than we could without volunteers.
You can also gain from the experience. You can meet new friends, learn new skills, give something back to the community or simply enjoy the fact that you’re helping older people in your area.

Who can volunteer?

Anyone can volunteer, whatever their background or skills. You don’t have to have lots of time or be multi-talented either. You only need to commit to whatever time you can spare, be it a few hours or a few days a week and whatever your skills, we can help you find the right volunteer experience for you. Training is available and volunteering can be a great way to learn new skills or try things you’ve never done before. And, as we pay travel expenses, you won’t be out of pocket.

What can I do?

Loads of things!

As all of our projects involve volunteers there is a wide range of opportunities to choose from.

You could:

  • provide regular telephone calls to isolated people,
  • give out information and advice
  • help in our day centres or at our social groups for frail & isolated older people
  • drive a minibus
  • work in our shop to help raise much needed funds
  • train to be a walking group leader
  • be one of our charity fundraiser
  • stake older people to and from medical appointments

Whatever your skills or interests, we’ll try to use them!

How do I apply?

If you aren’t sure what you would like to do, or would like any more information, please contact us on 0191 477 3559. We will be happy to discuss anything with you and arrange for you to come in for an informal chat.

We ask for two references and, depending on what project you work in, you will also have to have a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS). But don’t let this put you off; it’s not as scary as it sounds and we will help you do all the paperwork.

You’ll receive a full induction before you start with your chosen project and we’ll support you fully in your volunteering experience. Please come and join the team!
