We support vulnerable older people (aged 50+) to make decisions and to be heard when decisions are being made about their lives. We listen to their views and concerns, help them to explore their options and inform them of their rights. We provide information to help them make informed decisions and help them contact relevant people or contact them on their behalf (referral and signposting). We can also accompany and support clients in meetings and appointments. Our work encompasses supporting clients with decisions relating to (but not limited to): care planning, medical appointments and admissions, financial planning and administration, debt management and housing.
If we assess that a client will need longer term help with financial / personal administration or complex issues, we visit them once a month to assist with these needs but this is a paid service (£23 per hour, usually once a month).
Advocacy Peer Support Group
We run a weekly advocacy peer support group. This is a group of people who have been involved with the Advocacy Service, who often have a diagnosis of a mental health condition. The group aims to reduce isolation and provide a safe space for attendees to meet and discuss matters.
Refer to Age UK services
Within our role we frequently refer to other Age UK Gateshead specialised services such as will writing and POA, the day service and to the information and Advice team for benefits checks.
