Find out more about The Carers Course...
Dementia carers are often given the diagnosis at the same moment as the person they support, and from that point they’re expected to simply carry on. While information about dementia is available, there is no formal carer training to help people understand what to do next.
The Carer Course will support carers to learn practical tips and techniques that many carers have never been shown before. Just as importantly, it brings people together with others in similar situations, creating a sense of shared understanding and much‑needed peer support.
The 3-hour session will be tailored to the participants and taught by industry professionals. Whether someone is still waiting for a diagnosis or already far along in their caring journey, the content adapts to the challenges they are facing right now. Carers leave with hands‑on, everyday strategies that make life easier and help them feel more confident in what they’re doing for their loved one. By putting first aid and manual handling into the context of dementia, attendees learn how small changes in communication and instruction can help keep their loved one calm, reducing stress and anxiety for everyone involved. know the difficulty of finding a “free” afternoon to attend events, so they have arranged for the session to be at a venue where you can bring your cared for person with you and they will be looked after while you attend the course.
Age UK Gloucestershire and other relevant dementia specialist organisations will also be available on the day to offer a wide range of information and be able to answer your questions. They can also inform you about national services, alongside examples of helpful gadgets and tools that can make daily life more manageable.
