International Older Person's Day Event
Published on 05 October 2026 01:33 PM

On 1st October,Age UK Islington, together with Highbury Roundhouse, celebrated the International Day of Older People, recognising the invaluable contribution older residents make to Islington’s diverse communities.
Councillor Ruth Hayes, Deputy Leader of Islington Council and Executive Member for Health and Social Care, highlighted the experience, knowledge, skills and wisdom older people bring as volunteers, carers, community leaders, neighbours and family members.
She emphasised the importance of social connection and opportunities to remain active, independent and included.
Councillor Hayes thanked Age UK Islington and Highbury Roundhouse for organising the celebration, and local residents for building stronger communities, sharing their knowledge and inspiring future generations.
Residents also contributed to the celebrations by sharing their own stories and poems. Some raised a smile with their warmth and humour, while others offered thoughtful reflections and memories. Each contribution made the occasion feel special and personal, while giving people a lovely opportunity to meet, chat and make new connections.

More poems and stories
It was great that so many people wanted to share poems and stories and we also heard readings of the following:
'Warning' a poem by Jenny Joseph
“We Are Survivors” or “For Those Born Before 1945.”
A reading of a tribute to Helen Bamber, the British humanitarian and human-rights campaigner whose life’s work began with the survivors of Bergen-Belsen and continued for nearly 70 years.
“On a Tired Housewife” — Anonymous (traditional)
Islington resident, Michael Sugrue, wasn't able to attend the event, but shared his poem by email.
LOVE
Someone once sung, “Love is a many wonderous thing”
A love of a person, place, and even a dawning Spring.
Being in love is a joy to behold,
Just think of the music and stories thats told.
Of course love comes in so many forms,
The love of close friends such pleasure adorns.
That Summer storm deluge, relief from the heat,
Have love in your eyes whoever you meet.
They say “love is blind”, faults unseen through loves praise,
Head over heels admiring through love’s haze.
I love my family, still growing and learning,
Great Nephews and Nieces much missed with great yearning.
Try spreading your love, with no strings attached,
Surprise how people will follow and match.
Just like a virus, from peoples to peoples,
Love’s glow and joy will make us all equals.
