Keeping Safe and Warm in the Cold Weather

How to stay happy and healthy throughout the winter months

With shorter days and low temperatures, the winter months can be challenging, but fortunately there is plenty you can do to stay warm and safe. Here are our top tips for a warm and healthy winter:

  • Layer up: be sure to wear multiple layers of clothing when going outside, such as jumpers, coats, scarfs, hats and gloves.
  • Mind the ice: especially in the morning, or after snow, ice on the roads and pavements can cause slips and falls. Is possible, stay inside when the ground is icy, and wear sturdy footwear with non-slip soles for better grip.
  • Stay warm indoors: keep the room temperature to a minimum of 18°C. Wear a jumper and use blankets to stay warm, and close the curtains at night for insulation.
  • Stay healthy: during the colder months, flu and other viruses are spread more easily. If you are over 65 you can get a free flu jab from your GP or a local pharmacy. You can also book your coronavirus booster jab by calling 119 free of charge.
  • Eat healthily: our bodies need more energy to stay warm during the winter, so make sure you are eating balanced and nutritional meals and drinking plenty of water.
  • Stay positive: it is normal to feel down when there is less light in the day. Connect with friends and family, watch a feel-good film or TV series, or take up a new hobby. Most importantly, remember that there is help available if you are struggling.
