Green Journeys Together: Volunteer Opportunities Connecting Older People with Nature
Published on 10 March 2026 02:21 PM
Age UK Norfolk is excited to launch a brand-new pilot project, Green Journeys Together, funded by the Norfolk Offshore Wind Farms Community Fund via the Norfolk Community Foundation. This innovative programme is designed to help older people in Norfolk engage with nature, enjoy the outdoors, and improve their wellbeing — and we’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join us as Green Companions.
Why Green Journeys Together?
Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature has proven benefits for both mental and physical health, particularly for older adults. Green Journeys Together combines environmental engagement with social connection, offering older participants opportunities to:
- Enjoy birdwatching, planting seeds and bulbs, and creating bird feeders or small container gardens.
- Take part in gentle walks, village litter picks, and visits to community gardens and allotments.
- Explore local green spaces, from nearby parks and coastal paths to larger estates like Blickling, with activities tailored to each person’s ability.
By supporting older people to connect with the natural world, this project fosters wellbeing, social inclusion, and environmental awareness, all within a supportive community setting.
Volunteer as a Green Companion
We are recruiting volunteers passionate about nature, gardening, and outdoor activities, who want to make a tangible difference in the lives of older people. As a Green Companion, you will help participants:
- Engage safely in outdoor activities.
- Explore new green spaces and learn about growing and nature-based projects.
- Build friendships and connections within their local community.
No prior experience is needed — full guidance and support will be provided, and volunteering is a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors, meet new people, and contribute to a meaningful community initiative.
