Menopause Awareness Month
Published on 22 October 2025 11:10 AM
October is Menopause Awareness Month, a time to highlight the experiences of people in midlife who are experiencing menopause and raise awareness of how workplaces can better support them. Research shows that 10% of those experiencing challenging menopausal symptoms leave their jobs, and 6 in 10 report that these symptoms negatively impact their working life.
Age UK Norfolk, in partnership with Age Scotland, is offering Menopause at Work: Tools and Techniques for Managers — a three-hour interactive workshop designed to equip managers with the knowledge and skills to support staff experiencing menopause.
We spoke to Niki Woods, menopause and midlife wellness educator, about why menopause is still a taboo subject and how workplaces can make a difference.
Why the taboo?
Deep-rooted societal attitudes towards ageing, gendered ageism, and historical silence around female health have contributed to stigma. Menopause has often been associated with decline, leaving many people reluctant to discuss symptoms at work.
The impact on careers
Unmanaged symptoms — including hot flushes, insomnia, anxiety, and brain fog — can affect confidence and performance. Combined with high-pressure jobs, childcare, or caring for elderly relatives, many people feel isolated and unsupported, sometimes leading to burnout or leaving their roles.
Supporting women in the workplace
Managers, including men, play a key role. By listening without judgment, educating themselves about menopause, and offering practical adjustments — such as flexible hours or changes to the workspace — they can create a safe and inclusive environment. Niki highlights that normalising conversations and respecting confidentiality are essential.
Why our workshops matter
Our Menopause at Work training demystifies menopause, explores its legal context, and gives managers practical tools to support staff. The sessions aim to build confidence, improve workplace culture, and ensure people can continue to thrive professionally during this natural life stage.
