Supporting Norfolk’s Ageing Community

An interview with Rachel Buxton, Trustee of Age UK Norfolk and co-owner of Hoveton Estate Gardens
Since 1947, Age UK Norfolk has supported older people across the county with compassion, dignity, and practical help. An entirely independent charity, every penny raised benefits people living in Norfolk.
“We are truly made in Norfolk, for Norfolk,” says Rachel Buxton, Trustee of Age UK Norfolk and co-owner of Hoveton Estate Gardens. “Every pound helps older people in our towns and villages to live well, often behind closed doors and away from the spotlight.”
With one of the UK’s fastest-ageing populations—especially in North Norfolk, where over a third of residents are 65 or older—challenges such as loneliness, financial insecurity, and access to services are growing.
“It’s a privilege to grow older in such a beautiful place,” Rachel reflects. “But for many, especially without close family nearby, it can be a lonely and uncertain time. Age UK Norfolk offers a safety net—whether that’s navigating benefits, managing finances, or simply having someone to talk to.”
Essential Services, Locally Delivered
Age UK Norfolk provides vital services tailored to older people in the county, including:
- Information and advice: Over 10,000 advice line calls answered annually.
- Help with entitlements: Over £4 million in welfare benefits claimed last year.
- Companionship: 8,500+ befriending calls to reduce isolation.
- Budgeting and advocacy: Over £53,000 in personal debt reduced.
These services, delivered by a small team and local volunteers, are a lifeline for many. With cuts to statutory care services and growing demand, the charity’s support has never been more needed.
Rachel became a Trustee after caring for her own parents and in-laws.
“Looking after family brought these issues into sharp focus. Many older people are just getting by. I wanted to support a charity that gives them a voice.”
Rooted in Norfolk Life
Rachel has lived in Norfolk for over 20 years and welcomes thousands of visitors to Hoveton Hall Gardens each year.
“Norfolk has a big heart, full of wonderful people. But rural life can be isolating—especially where there are no buses or local services. That’s where Age UK Norfolk comes in.”
Why Support Matters
Charities supporting older people are often overlooked in favour of more emotive causes. But the need is real—and growing.
“When you support Age UK Norfolk, you’re supporting your own community—maybe even your neighbours.”
