Age UK Norfolk helps older people claim £5.2 million in welfare benefits and urges local residents to “start the conversation” this Talk Money Week

In 2024–2025, Age UK Norfolk helped older people across the county to secure £5.2 million in welfare benefits – money that makes a real difference in people’s everyday lives.

As the cost of living continues to increase, many older people are finding it harder to make ends meet. Age UK Norfolk is using Talk Money Week (3–7 November 2025) to encourage older people to start the conversation about money and access the support they need.

Talk Money Week, coordinated by the Money and Pensions Service, is a national campaign aimed at breaking the stigma around talking about finances and encouraging people to seek help early.

Ann Donkin, Chief Executive of Age UK Norfolk, said:
“Helping local older people claim £5.2 million in welfare benefits last year shows just how much difference starting a conversation about money can make. Many people are entitled to support they don’t know about. Through our Money MOT and advice services, we help people check their benefits, organise their finances, and plan ahead with confidence.”

One service user who was supported to make a claim for welfare benefits, said, “I would never have applied if not for Age UK Norfolk’s advice and help. Taken a lot of worry off my mind. Thank you.”, while another stated, “I cannot give enough praise for what you have done for me. Alone, no family and desperate, you have given me light. Thank you so much. I am overwhelmed.”

The Money MOT service is a free, one-to-one support programme that guides older people through budgeting, benefit checks, and household finance management. Each participant receives a Money MOT Logbook to track income, outgoings, and bills, supported every step of the way by a trained advocate.

“Our Money MOT service is a great way to start the conversation about money,” added Ann. “Even a single chat can unlock significant financial support and peace of mind.”
