Time to Talk

Thursday 5th February 2026 marks Time to Talk Day, a national campaign encouraging everyone to have open conversations about mental health. Talking about how we feel can make a real difference, helping to break the stigma around mental health and supporting people to feel connected in their communities.
At Age UK Norfolk, we know that social connection is vital for wellbeing, particularly for older people living in rural or coastal areas of Norfolk. Isolation can increase if mobility, health, or other challenges make it difficult to get out and about.
That’s why we provide practical services to help older people stay socially engaged, maintain independence, and access information and support across Norfolk.
How Age UK Norfolk Helps Older People in Norfolk Stay Connected
-
Companionship Services: Our trained volunteers offer regular phone calls, home visits to older residents or support to get out and about; providing companionship, conversation, and a friendly check-in.
-
Signposting to Social Clubs and Community Groups: Across Norfolk, there are many age-friendly activities, from lunch clubs and coffee mornings to creative sessions and gentle exercise classes. While Age UK Norfolk does not run all of these directly, we collect and share information about local opportunities, helping older people stay socially active and connected.
-
Digital Inclusion Support: Our Digital Champions help older people in Norfolk use devices, set up video calls and messaging apps, access online services safely, and stay in touch with family, friends, and their communities.
Why Talking Matters
Starting a conversation can make a big difference. Small chats with friends, family, neighbours, or community members can reduce feelings of loneliness and help people feel part of their community.
While Age UK Norfolk does not provide counselling or clinical mental health support, our services focus on practical assistance, social connection, and access to local activities, helping older people maintain wellbeing. For those who need professional mental health support, we encourage contacting a GP or local mental health services.
This Time to Talk Day, let’s make Norfolk a more connected and supportive place for everyone. Reach out, have a conversation, and check in on the older people in your community.
