New Dementia Support Service Launches in Newcastle

Families and individuals in Newcastle who are caring for or living with dementia can now access multi-tiered dementia specialist support. This new service, titled Dementia Connections Service Newcastle, is launched through a partnership between Age UK North Tyneside, Search Newcastle, and Dementia UK.

This new initiative has been made possible through the generous support of The Barbour Foundation, the Ballinger Trust, and Dementia UK. This marks a significant step forward in providing much-needed, expert-led dementia support in Newcastle.

Specialist Dementia Support

Dementia Connections Service operates in Newcastle and North Tyneside. It is supported by the Admiral Nurse service, which was previously only offered in North Tyneside.

Admiral Nurses are registered nurses who specialise in dementia and provide expert guidance, clinical care and emotional support to carers and families affected by dementia.

Through the new Dementia Connections Service, Admiral Nurses can help people living with dementia stay independent for longer and support their families in navigating the complexities of care, their loved one’s diagnosis, and health systems and support options available.

Admiral Nurses not only work directly with carers and people living with dementia, but also support health professionals and care providers, ensuring joined-up care for families across services. They work closely with families to build resilience, provide education and ensure they have the tools and confidence to manage day-to-day challenges.

“This is a huge step forward for people living with dementia and their carers in Newcastle,” said Dawn McNally, Chief Executive of Age UK North Tyneside. “We are proud to bring our experience of delivering Admiral Nurse services in North Tyneside into this new partnership, reaching even more families who desperately need specialist support.”

The Dementia Connections Service will be delivered by experienced Admiral Nurses, helping ensure the highest standards of dementia support across Newcastle and North Tyneside. The new service aims to:

  • Reduce crisis points and hospital admissions
  • Improve the quality of life for carers and those living with dementia
  • Provide earlier access to appropriate support
  • Ease pressure on local health and care systems
