Engaging, fun and stimulating activities and social workshops to improve memory, cognitive function and quality of life for people living with dementia, their carers and family.

Living well with Dementia is a 24 week MCST Dementia programme of engaging and stimulating activities and social workshops designed to improve memory, cognitive function and quality of life.

What is MCST?

MCST is a weekly group-based cognitive stimulation therapy programme proven to improve cognition and quality of life for people living with mild to moderate dementia.

Group members, and their carers, take part in meaningful and stimulating activities over a two-hour session, which are designed to create conversation and engage with members in a fun, supportive and relaxed environment.

Themes include 'My Life History' and 'Household Treasures' as well as team quizzes, music, games, crafts and the opportunity to build friendships and enjoy peer support.

Why is MCST important?

Cognitive Stimulation therapy is the only non-drug treatment recommended to improve cognition, independence and well-being by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

After someone is diagnosed with dementia, they may be offered Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST). This is a short-term programme for people with mild to moderate dementia and usually runs weekly for seven weeks following diagnosis.

MCST follows the same principles of CST over a longer term, helping to improve memory and cognitive function, as well and supporting carers with peer support and access to additional Age UK Northumberland support services such as information, advice, welfare benefits, advocacy, befriending and bereavement support.

Do members need to have completed a programme of CST prior to joining the MCST programme?

No, the programme is running to support anyone living in Northumberland who is aged 50+ and has been diagnosed with mild to moderate dementia.

Is there a cost?

There is a £10 weekly charge to help us fund the weekly programme, this includes a cuppa and a scone for participants and their carer. This fee will be invoiced at the beginning of each month.

Participants are very welcome to stay for lunch in our Round House Cafe for a small additional charge.
