Information & Advice case study
Outcome: Attendance Allowance awarded

A 90 year old man who had been recently widowed, was living alone and in poor health.
Following the death of his wife, he contacted us to ask about pendant alarm choices.

We’d previously assisted his wife to get higher rate Attendance Allowance, and so we
investigated the possibility of claiming it for him.

After visiting him at home, the claim was successful and we received the following letter:

“Today I have received my first payment of attendance allowance. Please accept the
enclosed as a thank you for the help and assistance given to me during the last eight months. A service I did not know existed, my wife’s stay in hospital, and then her home care by me, and finally her death were eased considerably by your efforts.

Being ninety years of age and registered disabled, I had visions of a care home or similar but now thanks to Age UK Torbay and the help available from the NHS I feel sure that I am able to be able to live alone. Once again many thanks for your help.”
