Warnings about scams22

13 January 2015

Derbyshire Constabulary

There are lots of scams around that sound convincing but are designed to trick people into giving away personal details and/or money. Derbyshire Constabulary and other agencies send out regular warnings to try and help people avoid particular people, companies or general scams. Here is the latest scam warning that has come from Derbyshire Constabulary and Trading Standards:

Unsolicited Calls

Trading Standards is advising consumers in Derbyshire postcode areas that they may receive unsolicited calls from businesses trying to sell them a monitored security system.  The caller may persuade the homeowner to agree to a visit by a salesman.

Trading Standards advice is to think very carefully before agreeing to contract.  You may be asked to sign up to an expensive monitored system that is not suitable for your needs.  You should look carefully for any hidden costs, such as annual maintenance fees, that may make the system more expensive than it initially appears.

If you do agree a contract in your own home costing more than £42, you are legally entitled to a 14 day cancellation period during which you can change your mind.  This changes however, if you make a request in writing for the service to begin within this 14 day period.  You should refuse to sign anything which allows the installation or contract to start immediately, unless you are sure it is what you want.  If you are concerned that you may have entered into such an agreement, please call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service (CACS) as soon as possible.  CACS provides free, confidential and impartial advice on consumer issues. We would advise that if you feel that you want an alarm system for your home, shop around for at least 3 different quotes from reputable local businesses.  Derbyshire Trading Standards Service can help you find honest and reliable traders with our Trusted Trader scheme.  All the businesses who sign up with us have been checked out by our trading standards team so you know you'll be in safe hands.  To find a Trusted Trader in your area or to sign up for the scheme yourself call 08456 058 058 or visit
