Strong and Steady Programme

Live Stronger for Longer offers a special programme for people aged 65+ living in Derbyshire who need some extra help to get ‘strong and steady’.
Strong and Steady is a free, intensive, 24-week, weekly postural stability (PSI) exercise, falls management and behaviour change programme.

What the programme provides

Our Strong and Steady programme will provide:
• Subsidised, supported transport
• A one-hour postural stability (PSI) class offering personalised exercise
• A one-hour activity addressing behaviour change for falls prevention and wellbeing
• Weekly ‘homework’ with individual exercises and tasks set
• Regular assessment and progress reports
• Progress charts for users and carers
• Onward journey planning to community LSFL community classes and wellbeing activities
• Information and Advice support for income maximisation, independent living support and wellbeing activities

The new Strong and Steady service will help to bridge the gap between clinical falls services and the community classes and enable clients to make sustained progress towards improved strength and balance they can maintain in a community class.
A referral to Live Stronger for Longer for the Strong and Steady programme can work alongside referrals to other services where there may be waiting lists; and participating in the programme can help to promote positive approaches to other treatments and develop the mobility required to attend appointments.
Older people aged 65+ with reduced strength and balance and resident in Derbyshire can refer themselves or be referred to a Strong and Steady programme via the Live Stronger for Longer service.
As an indicator we use a simple mobility test with a self-score on confidence about mobility and key factors in falls risk. The Timed Up & Go test (TUG) measures how long it takes you to stand up, walk 10 feet, turn, walk back and sit down again. It is used to estimate your risk of falls and functional mobility. If it takes you more than 15 seconds to perform the test you would probably benefit from a Strong and Steady programme.
