At Age UK Doncaster, we know that friendship, connection and companionship are key to ageing well. That’s why we offer a three-tier befriending service designed to meet different levels of need – from friendly chats over coffee to specialist dementia support. All of our services are person-centred, meaning they are shaped around what matters most to the individual.
Level 1: Volunteer Befriending – Free for 6 Months
Who it’s for: Older people in Doncaster who are socially isolated but generally able to get out and about. They may be a little frail, but do not have a diagnosis of dementia or significant mobility issues.
What we offer: Friendly, informal companionship provided by trained volunteers. This is not a care service – it’s a social connection. Volunteers might:
- Meet you for a chat or coffee
- Go for a walk or gentle activity
- Attend community events, cinema, or the theatre with you
- Encourage you to re-engage with hobbies or interests
How it works:
- Sessions are arranged at a mutually convenient time
- Volunteers are not responsible for personal care, mobility aids or medical tasks
- There is no cost for up to six months
- We aim to help you build confidence, independence, and reconnect with your community
Expected outcomes:
- Reduced loneliness and isolation
- Improved emotional wellbeing
- Greater community involvement
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer befriender you can apply now using our online application form!
Level 2: Keep in Mind – Early Dementia Support (6-Week Programme)
Who it’s for: People who have recently been diagnosed with dementia. You may be feeling unsure, anxious or isolated and looking for support to adjust and stay connected.
What we offer: A time-limited, structured support programme delivered by trained staff with experience in dementia care. You can self-refer or be referred by a professional.
We will:
- Match you with a dementia-trained staff member for meaningful social contact
- Help you remain active, valued, and connected
- Support your confidence to live well following diagnosis
- Offer light-touch guidance for your family or carer if needed
How it works:
- Six sessions, typically over six weeks
- Sessions are flexible in time and setting – usually one-to-one in community spaces or at home
- No charge for this programme
Expected outcomes:
- Better understanding of dementia
- Reduced anxiety following diagnosis
- Enhanced confidence and social connection
- A potential pathway to further support if needed
Level 3: Bespoke Befriending – Tailored Paid Support
Who it’s for: People with more complex needs who may need some additional help to enjoy companionship safely. This might include:
- Mild to moderate cognitive impairment
- Physical health issues that require some mobility support (but not personal care)
- A preference for consistency and predictability in who supports them
What we offer:
A paid befriending service delivered by trained, paid staff who can offer:
- One-to-one companionship tailored to your interests and routine
- Help getting out and about safely (e.g. someone to walk with who understands your pace or needs)
- Support with light tasks such as using public transport or attending community activities
How it works:
- Fully flexible – you choose the frequency and nature of support
- Delivered by experienced, dementia-aware staff
- Fee-based (we’ll always explain costs up front and offer a clear agreement)
Expected outcomes:
- Improved quality of life and wellbeing
- Safer access to community and social life
- Trusted, reliable support tailored to you
