Bridging the digital gap for people in later life
As the world moves online, it’s easy to forget that not everyone can keep up. Imagine needing help but not having the tools to reach it, that’s the reality for many older people today as vital services move to digital-only systems. It's a crisis hiding in plain sight...
Left out by the digital world
Every day, our team hears from people across East Sussex who can’t access the benefits and support they’re entitled to because applications are now online. These aren’t luxuries - they’re essentials that help people stay mobile, and connected.
For those without internet access or the confidence to use it, simple tasks become overwhelming. The result? Missed benefits, lost independence, and growing isolation.
"It’s not that we don’t want to use the internet - we just need someone to show us how, or to help us when we don't understand what we need to do.”
Elaine’s story
Elaine, 71, tried for weeks to apply for her Blue Badge online. Each time, the website timed out or rejected her form. Without the badge, she stopped driving - which meant no shopping, no social visits, and no independence.
When she contacted our Information & Advice team, we guided her through the process and submitted her application on her behalf. Within weeks, Elaine had her Blue Badge - and her confidence - back.
"Kelly's help with my Blue Badge application changed everything. I can drive again, see my friends, and feel like myself."
How you can help
Right now, our Information & Advice team is facing unprecedented demand. We’re around three months behind in helping people apply for Attendance Allowance, simply because so many older people need our support.
Every week, more people reach out - anxious, struggling, and waiting for help to access the benefits they’re entitled to. The situation is desperate, and without extra funding, people will continue to face long delays.
It costs around £55 to help someone complete their full application, but just £15 can start them on that journey - connecting them with our team and giving them the first one-to-one support they need.
Your gift today will help reduce waiting times, reach people sooner, and make sure no one in later life is left behind by online systems.
