For many people in Hastings, the Isabel Blackman Centre (IBC) is more than just a building - it’s a safe, welcoming haven where health, friendships, and community come together. Julia Garvey, a member for the past two years, knows first-hand just how much of a difference the IBC can make.

The Isabel Blackman Centre is a friendly health, leisure, and wellbeing hub in Hastings Old Town for the over 50s.

Members and guests enjoy fitness and activity classes, an accessible gym, and relax afterwards in the café. It’s an affordable, welcoming place to stay active, keep learning, and connect with others. Here's how it impacted Julia's life:

A fresh start after lockdown

Following the pandemic, Julia’s long-term lung condition and other health problems left her feeling isolated and vulnerable. Looking for a way to improve her health and rebuild her confidence, she joined the chair-based exercise class with Gym Co-ordinator, Ebs.

“The class not only improved my physical health, but it boosted my mental wellbeing too,” Julia shared. “Afterwards I’d stay for a coffee - sometimes food as well - and that became an important social interaction. I made new friendships that I really value.”

Discovering new passions

The IBC isn’t only about physical activity. Julia also joined the Art Group, where her talent blossomed into a three-month exhibition of her work. “It gave me something positive to focus on and share with others,” she said.

Even as her physical health declined this past year, Julia found the IBC continued to be a vital support. Simple things, like using the accessible shower facilities, made her daily life much easier.
