At 91, Mary had begun to feel the weight of loneliness after losing her husband. Everyday tasks felt overwhelming, and she often spent her days in silence.

That changed when she was introduced to Sarah, a befriending volunteer with Age UK East Sussex. Together, they’ve built a friendship that has transformed both of their lives and helped Mary reconnect with her community.

Rediscovering Old Passions

One of the first things Sarah noticed was Mary’s love of crafts. With encouragement, she introduced Mary to a local craft afternoon.

This simple step rekindled Mary’s joy for knitting and crochet - hobbies she hadn’t picked up in years. Now her evenings are filled with colourful creations and a sense of purpose that had been missing.

Building Confidence and Independence

Mary had also set herself a goal: she wanted to regain the confidence to walk to her local corner shop. It seemed daunting at first, especially after so much time at home.

Sarah walked alongside her, offering encouragement and helping her ask shop staff for support with small challenges, like opening the heavy door. Over time, Mary became more independent, and now she makes the trip to the shop on her own - a small act that feels like a huge victory.

Finding Community and Connection

Thanks to Sarah, Mary also attends a regular lunch club with transport provided. The group not only gives her a warm meal but also laughter, conversation, and new friendships. These activities have lifted Mary’s spirits and helped her feel part of the East Sussex community again.

“I didn’t think life could feel this bright again,” Mary shared. “Since I have been befriended, I am far more relaxed and able to cope with most things. I look forward to visits and calls. Sarah seems to know exactly what I need to make my day very happy. She is very kind and understanding, also a joy to see and be in the company of.”

Why Befriending Matters

Mary’s story shows how powerful befriending can be. Volunteers like Sarah don’t just give their time — they bring companionship, confidence, and joy to older people who may otherwise feel isolated.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering in East Sussex, our befriending service is a wonderful way to make a real difference. You could be the reason someone like Mary feels less lonely, more connected, and truly valued.
