Why Create a Lasting Power of Attorney?

Planning ahead can make all the difference for you and your loved ones.

No one likes to imagine a time when they might not be able to make their own decisions — but planning ahead can make life much easier for you and your loved ones.

Every week, families across East Sussex face challenges when a relative can no longer manage their own affairs. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place, even a spouse or close family member may not have the legal right to help.

Setting up an LPA gives someone you trust the authority to make important decisions on your behalf — about your health, care, or finances — if you’re ever unable to.

What Is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you choose one or more people (your attorneys) to act for you if you lose mental capacity. It ensures that, whatever happens, your wishes are respected and your affairs are handled by people you trust.

  • Health and care decisions – your daily care, medical treatment, and where you live.
  • Property and financial decisions – managing your money, bills, or property.

Why Set One Up Now?

Setting up an LPA early:

  • Protects your family from stressful and costly legal processes later
  • Gives you control over who acts for you
  • Ensures decisions are made in your best interests
  • Can be changed or cancelled at any time
“When my mum developed advanced dementia, we couldn’t help her until my dad became her deputy via the Court of Protection — it took over a year.”

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Anyone aged 18 or over can set up an LPA for themselves.
