Loneliness can quietly affect so many of us, especially during the winter months. At Age UK East Sussex, our Befriending Service is helping to change that, one conversation, one visit, and one connection at a time.

This quarter, referrals have remained steady, and we’re seeing growing interest in face-to-face support - something we’re actively exploring to meet local needs. New volunteers are joining our team, bringing fresh energy and helping us reach even more people who could benefit from a friendly chat or visit.

“As the Befriending Coordinator for Age UK East Sussex, I see every day how transformative a simple, genuine human connection can be," says Fran, our Befriending Coordinator. Our Befriending service isn’t just about reducing loneliness; it’s about restoring confidence, developing supportive relationships, and establishing regular, positive contact that reminds older people they are valued and supported.”

Volunteers are the heart of the service. Bill, one of our volunteers, puts it perfectly.

Could you give a few hours towards helping a lonely older person in your community?

“It’s not hugely demanding time-wise, but it’s hugely worthwhile,” he says.

“Both of my clients have been very different people, and it’s fascinating to think about how you adapt to different personalities and attitudes to life.”

On the receiving end, the impact is just as powerful. Mary, a client who has been matched with a befriender, shared...

“I didn’t think life could feel this bright again,” Mary said. “Since I have been befriended, I am far more relaxed and able to cope with most things. I look forward to visits and calls. Sarah seems to know exactly what I need to make my day very happy. She is very kind and understanding, also a joy to see and be in the company of."

Fran also highlights the simple but profound effect of regular connection:

“Befriending is simple, but it makes a real difference. For someone who might go days without speaking to anyone, that regular call or visit reminds them they’re not alone. It’s emotional support that genuinely improves daily life.”

Behind the scenes, we’ve been strengthening our processes to ensure the service continues to grow and adapt. This includes collaborating with the University of Kent on a pilot project using their CAVEAT tool, helping us better understand and support our volunteers.

We’ve also been raising awareness across the county - distributing postcards to GP surgeries and community hubs and attending events like the ESCC Care and Support Drop-In in Uckfield. These connections help older people know that support is available and build stronger networks within our communities.

Why Befriending Matters

  • For older people: combats loneliness and improves wellbeing.

  • For volunteers: a rewarding way to give back and build meaningful relationships.

  • For communities: strengthens social ties and promotes inclusion.
