Many older people receive services to help them live independently in their own homes, but can still be lonely and isolated. Our Social Opportunities project offers companionship and the chance to make new social contacts for housebound, socially isolated older people in Gateshead. We do this in a variety of ways:

Men's Group

This group meets every fortnight on a Friday for a hot lunch and a pint or two! Transport is provided and meetings tend to take place in a variety of pubs and clubs across Gateshead. Door to door transport is provided and please note that there is a charge for this service.

Other Social Groups

We have a number of social groups for people who are isolated or housebound. Door to door transport is provided and please note that there is a charge for this as well as a membership fee.

If you would like to be considered for any of our Social Opportunities services or make a referral on behalf of someone else, please contact the Social Opportunities Manager on the number below. To ensure confidentiality we advise that contact should be made by telephone, letter or fax.

Telephone Companions

Our volunteers offer a Telephone Companions service and provide regular telephone calls to isolated  people, many of whom are unable to leave the house unaided.  You can choose to receive a phone call on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Sunday mornings can be possible but not guaranteed.

This has proved to be a very popular service, and gives the older person the reassurance of regular contact, a friendly chat and contact with someone who can signpost to staff within Age UK Gateshead if there are any problems the client may need help with.
