About NGDAA

The Newcastle Gateshead Dementia Action Alliance (NGDAA) was launched in 2024 to bring people and organisations together to improve life for those living with dementia, as well as their families and carers.

Led by Age UK Gateshead, the alliance brings together local organisations, businesses, services, community groups and individuals who share a commitment to making Newcastle and Gateshead more dementia friendly.

By working together, members can share knowledge, ideas and resources, learn from one another and take practical action within their own organisations and communities. This could include improving the way services support people with dementia, making public spaces more welcoming and accessible, raising awareness or helping staff and volunteers to better understand dementia.

The alliance also aims to make sure the voices and experiences of people living with dementia and their carers are heard. Their experiences help us understand what is working well, where improvements are needed and what changes would make the biggest difference to their everyday lives.

NGDAA is about turning good intentions into meaningful action. By working together, we can help reduce stigma, improve understanding and create communities where people affected by dementia feel respected, included and supported.

Whether you are a local business, charity, community group, health or social care service, or simply someone who wants to make a difference, there is a place for you within the alliance.

The key objectives of the NGDAA are as follows:

• To ensure that everyone living with dementia in Newcastle Gateshead is understood, respected, and properly supported.
• To enable individuals with dementia to continue living fulfilling lives and contributing to their communities for as long as possible.
• To engage and inspire the wider community to better understand dementia, empowering individuals to actively contribute to the creation of dementia-friendly spaces and services.

The NGDAA brings together a broad range of member organisations across the City Region and serves as a central platform for fostering dementia-friendly initiatives.

These members include:

• Living Well North
• Metrocentre
• Gateshead Council
• Newcastle Council
• NHS Gateshead
• Rainbow Care Group
• Trinity Square
• Christ Church Felling
• Em Bells
• Healthwatch
• Edberts House
• Cardinal Hume Catholic School

Membership in the NGDAA is open to any organisation, and participation is entirely free. We encourage all members to take meaningful actions to better support individuals living with dementia in the Newcastle-Gateshead area.

The NGDAA plays a crucial role in enabling and supporting the creation of dementia-friendly communities. This is achieved through the recording and monitoring of dementia-friendly actions undertaken by member organisations and local communities. The NGDAA maintains a dedicated webpage on the Age UK Gateshead website, where you can track the progress and initiatives of all member organisations. In addition, the Newcastle Gateshead DAA holds regular meetings approximately four times a year, providing opportunities for networking, sharing best practices, and supporting the ongoing efforts of member organisations to build dementia-friendly environments.

By working together, we can ensure that Newcastle Gateshead is a place where everyone, including those living with dementia, can thrive.
